Influence of polarization-averaged photon splitting on cyclotron lines in large-scale atmospheres with super-strong magnetic fields

چکیده

We considered atmospheres comprised of two density regions of cyclotron resonant scattering and of almost no cyclotron resonant scattering where photon splitting occurs. Photon splitting occurs over a larger scale than cyclotron resonant scattering, since it occurs in a super-strong magnetic field regardless of the existence of a plasma. We investigated emergent spectra using the polarization-averaged cross section for photon splitting. We found that cyclotron absorption lines are strongly reprocessed by photon splitting and thus may not be detected even at a magnetic field of approximately 1.0 × 109 T in the power-law-type spectra.

Spectral Features in the Thermal Emission from Isolated Neutron Stars: Dependence on Magnetic Field Strengths

We study several effects that influence the strength of the proton cyclotron and atomic features in the thermal spectra of magnetic neutron stars. We show that it is possible for vacuum polarization to strongly suppress the spectral lines when the magnetic field B & 10 G. For weaker fields (B . 7× 10 G), the surface spectrum is unaffected by vacuum polarization; thus the proton cyclotron absorp...

Photon Splitting in Strongly Magnetized Plasma

The process of photon splitting, becomes allowed in the presence of strong magnetic field. We calculate the influence of magnetized plasma on the photon splitting absorption coefficient. We calculate the refraction coefficients and polarization vectors with the inclusion of the vacuum terms at an arbitrary value of the magnetic field, and then find photon splitting matrix element taking into ac...

On Radio Quiescence of Anomalous X-ray Pulsars and Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters

In the hot environments of the anomalous X-ray pulsars and the soft gamma-ray repeaters, as indicated by their luminous, pulsed, quiescent X-ray emission, γ-rays generated from the inner gaps may have shorter attenuation lengths via two photon pair production than via magnetic photon splitting. The AXP/SGR environments may not be pairless, even if photon splitting could completely suppress one ...

The Transitions Γγ → Νν̄ and Γ → Γγ in a Strong Magnetic Field

The photon-neutrino process γγ → ν ¯ ν and photon splitting are considered in a strong magnetic field. The partial polarization amplitudes are calculated within the standard model in the limit of a strong field. The amplitudes do not depend on the field strength in this limit. Using the vector parts of the amplitudes, the process of the photon splitting γ → γγ is investigated both below and abo...

Atmospheres and Spectra of Strongly Magnetized Neutron Stars

We construct atmosphere models for strongly magnetized neutron stars with surface fields B ∼ 10 − 10 G and effective temperatures Teff ∼ 10 6 − 10 K. The atmospheres directly determine the characteristics of thermal emission from isolated neutron stars, including radio pulsars, soft gamma-ray repeaters, and anomalous Xray pulsars. In our models, the atmosphere is composed of pure hydrogen or he...
